CaN & Social Work

Do you or someone you know feel lonely or isolated? “Loneliness and the feeling of being unwanted is the most terrible poverty” - Mother Teresa Research shows that many older adults feel lonely and isolated. Older adults are also more at risk of frequent admission to hospital and are the biggest users of health services. Societal changes over recent decades have resulted in communities in which the nuclear family predominates and neighbourliness is less common. This type of environment often makes it difficult for older adults to access support and be of support to others living nearby should this be needed.

This could be your answer

Communities and Neighbours (CAN) is working in communities by reintroducing the idea of ‘the friendly supportive’ neighbour. Putting some simple community based solutions in place will help reduce social isolation and loneliness, ultimately improve the older person’s wellbeing and health and improve neighbourhood and community connections.

What can you do?

If you are the person concerned you can contact CaN yourself.  If you know someone who you think would be interested in CAN please give them this information. They may be happy for you to make a referral to CAN on their behalf.

If you work with older people please contact CaN to find out about the referral process.
